From these humble beginnings the Centre has grown into a multi-faceted enterprise, specialising in every aspect of material reclamation.
The Centre is now at a major crossroads in its development; this blog will document the journey of its transition....http://www.blogger.com/profile/10175197836546420836noreply@blogger.comBlogger33125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6716993169251355006.post-72605916640592578812012-02-02T14:07:00.013+11:002012-02-08T13:39:37.930+11:00Aluminium drinks can collectionWe're always looking for new recycling opportunities. Last year, Salamander Bay Recycling purchased a number of purpose-built galvanised steel drinks can collection cages from a local steel fabrication business.

Here's an image of one here:

For the last 6 months the 12 cages have been placed with 8 of Port Stephens' privately-owned caravan and holiday parks.

The park's patrons have really adopted the idea of recycling drinks cans and we are pleased to advise that through their continued efforts we have collected in excess of 1.5 tonnes of aluminium drinks cans since the program commenced in July of 2011.

Second-hand aluminium is a valuable and under-recovered resource. By applying the correct logistical approach, the benefits, both to the business and the environment, can be rewarding. And due to the fact that we are a not-for-profit community organisation which invests heavily in the local community, the knock-on effect is felt by many.

The cages, which are highly visible, are placed at strategic locations in each caravan park. For example, they are positioned close to amenities and waste collection points where people can easily access them.

When the cages are getting close to being full, the caravan park staff call us and we visit the site to service the cages, and the whole process of refilling the cages by holiday-makers starts again.

On returning to the Centre with the collected cans, they are then emptied into a much larger storage cage. When filled, this large cage is then transported via flatbed truck to the OneSteel recycling plant in Newcastle where it too is emptied and then returned to the Centre for the whole process to recommence.

Here's a shot of the large half-filled can cage:

So as you can see, it is a cycle within a cycle (or put simply: Re-cycle).

A lot of our customers, staff and volunteers collect their own drinks cans and when their bag or bucket is full, they bring it in with them and add it to the collection.

Why don't you join us? It's a good feeling knowing that you're doing your bit to help with resource recovery and conservation. And you'll be helping the community by doing so.

Here's a list of the Caravan Parks who help us with this recycling endeavour:

Middle Rock Caravan Park, Anna Bay: http://www.middlerock.com.au/
One Mile Beach Holiday Park, Anna Bay: http://www.onemilebeach.com.au/
Birubi Beach Holiday Park, Anna Bay: http://birubibeachcaravanpark.officialsitepreview.info/showpage.asp?id=1
The Retreat, Anna Bay: http://www.theretreatportstephens.com.au/
Bays Holiday Park, Anna Bay: http://www.baysholidaypark.com/
Salamander Bay Village Caravan Park, Soldiers Point: http://www.caravan-camping.com.au/caravan-parks/10,80,173
Colonial Ridge Retreat, Soldiers Point: http://www.colonialridge.com.au/site/location
Big 4 Hoilday Park, Soldiers Point: http://soldiers-point-holiday-park.nsw.big4.com.au/

Please note that we only recycle aluminium drinks cans (beer cans, soft drinks cans etc).

Steel food cans and bottles are not accepted..http://www.blogger.com/profile/10175197836546420836noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6716993169251355006.post-89677098342837954482012-01-23T13:37:00.012+11:002012-02-02T14:06:15.730+11:00American Civil War Replica Rifle built from scrap parts.
Lance Bartlett, from Corlette, is a man with a passion.

A former Carpenter to trade, his retirement years have allowed him the time to develop his skills as a model-maker.

His previous designs have ranged in scope and scale but his most recent creations are something quite spectacular indeed.

Using obsolete materials, some of which have been purchased from Salamander Bay Recycling, Lance has crafted a beautiful replica Springfield Model 1861 Rifle Musket and a handsome pistol the originals of which were both used in the American Civil war (1861-1865).

Here's a photo of Lance's replica Springfield rifle:

And here's a photo of an original:

I'm sure you will agree that the similarities are quite remarkable.

According to Wikipedia:

"The Springfield Model 1861 was a Minié-type rifled musket shoulder arm used by the United States Army and Marine Corps during the American Civil War. Commonly referred to as the "Springfield" (after its original place of production, (Springfield, Massachusetts), it was the most widely used U.S. Army weapon during the Civil War, favored for its range, accuracy, and reliability".

The craftsmanship exhibited by Lance is incredible and a credit to his ability to bring out the best in what were previously discarded materials.

The items he used to build the models are as follows:

• Block of Australian Cedar cut to make the butt and barrel
• 10mm aluminium plate for the strike hammer
• An old broom handle for the barrel
• Copper nails
• Copper pipe for the trigger guard
• An old aluminium beer sign for the side plates
• Brass straps and brass nuts, bolts and screws for fastening

Lance explains the materials he used in this short video:

Great effort Lance, we look forward to seeing more of your creations in future.

You don't need to have the skill of a Lance Bartlett to make a difference. The community group will now be reducing its carbon footprint even further by harnessing the sun’s light to create electricity.

“You could say we are ‘recycling the sun'" said Gerard McClafferty, General Manager, Salamander Bay Recycling.

Salamander Bay Recycling helps to reduce landfill by thousands of tonnes each year whilst diverting valuable materials back to the community through the on-site retail shop.

Hundreds of tonnes of scrap metal are recycled annually and even lead/acid batteries are safely recycled to avoid acid discharge into the environment.

This new 48 panel solar power installation will save almost 12 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions being pumped into the atmosphere annually.

“Salamander Bay Recycling is committed to the ethos of recycling; solar power is another external expression of our ongoing commitment to improving the community and helps, in a small way, to protect our fragile environment” said Mr McClafferty.

SolarSwitch, who has installed for high profile clients including Sydney City Council and Kennards Hire, has been chosen to complete the installation.

SolarSwitch pride itself on installing quality equipment from reputable manufacturers whose warranties are held in Australia.

“We are very excited to be installing a system for such a fantastic organisation who carry out this important work that gives so much back to the local community and the planet” said Adam Tesoriero Director of SolarSwitch.

Investing in solar electricity has now become an extremely attractive investment option for homeowners, community organisations and businesses alike thanks to the new solar electricity rebate and the gross feed-in-tariff introduced in NSW in January this year.

The new solar electricity rebate, known as the “Solar Credits Scheme” is now open to everyone including community organisations and businesses, unlike the old Solar Homes and Communities Plan.

On top of this, the new solar buy back scheme or "gross feed-in-tariff" means anyone with a solar electricity system gets credited at least 60c per kilowatt hour for all the electricity their system generates. That’s almost four times the current retail rate.

SolarSwitch is one of the largest solar electricity installers in NSW and has worked with home owners, local government and businesses installing around 15% of the state’s systems last financial year.

For more information on installing solar electricity contact SolarSwitch on:

(02) 8985 9945 or 1300 880 969 or visit http://www.solarswitch.com.au/.

.
.http://www.blogger.com/profile/10175197836546420836noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6716993169251355006.post-62771160588806403552010-06-23T14:23:00.017+10:002010-11-04T15:04:48.466+11:00SATURDAY TRADE IS HERE...!!!.
.
Due to public demand; we at Salamander Bay Recycling have answered the call.
.
Saturday trading officially starts 26th June 2010.
.
Open from 9.00am to 2.00pm*, we hope that our increased trading hours make a difference to your weekend activities and encourage you to make a visit.
.
We have thousands of pre-loved items on sale. I'm bored"..
Customer, David Budden, saw the potential in many obscure items which he found at Salamander Bay Recycling and with the help of his children, they made a Billy Cart the whole neighbourhood is talking about.

Here's David's Billy Cart story:

"It was the school holidays and we had nothing to do, and nowhere to go, "What can we do dad? I'm bored". So down to the recycle centre, we went, to get the ingredients to make a billy cart.

Once everyone who works at the recycle centre knew we were building a billy cart, they couldn't have been more helpful as we rustled up a pram, some timber, an old broken golf buggy, some paint, some foam, some bolts and a couple of stainless steel vases to make cool exhaust pipes; all of which cost less than $20.

We took our booty home and proceeded to pull it all apart, cut the timber, use the pram and golf buggy, to build the best billy cart ever that all the kids in the street love.

It's the best 20 bucks I have ever spent, to both recycle some discarded items that may well have ended up in landfill and build something that is robust, to last probably years and give the kids in the street many hours of enjoyment...better than a PlayStation any day.."

Thanks David for your enthusiasm, we're sure that the kids will have many hours of fun on the Billy Cart.

Check out images of David's Billy Cart below (we reckon it looks pretty smart).

Just imagine what you and your kids could do with a bunch of odds and ends from Salamander Bay Recycling...

See if you can spot the golf buggy wheels, pram seat and vertically-aligned, three-wheel pram frame:

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5397774907010587138" style="DISPLAY: block;
